Tough sports day

Tough day for sports in New England. The Red Sox were eliminated by the Angels in a 3-0 sweep. They were leading in the top of the 9th inning 6-4 and then Jonathan Papelbon gave up three runs and they lost 7-6. I did not have really high expectations of them since they limped into the playoffs but it is always a let down when they end their season. It usually means a long, cold winter is right behind.

The Patriots lost today to Denver 20-17 in overtime. The are not off to the fastest start particularly for Super Bowl contender. Tom Brady and the offense still have a lot of work to do as they did not score in the second half. Hopefully they will get their problems figured out to make a run at the playoffs and we will see what happens from there.

In better news, I ran my first 10K today along the Tidal Basin area/Potomac Park. When you do it for the first time, the goal is to finish and that is what I did!

Teabaggers and NPC 5K

Who would have ever thought I would include politics and personal interests in the same post. Yesterday I ran the National Press Club 5k in downtown Washington in 25:40, another personal best for me. However the excitement came with the large teabagger protest right in Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Ave. The crowd was cooperative in staying out of the road but it was one of those "only in Washington" moments where you can get up and run a race and there is a sideshow going on around you.

When the race director was advising us to be aware of the "other people celebrating the first amendment" it was comical to see him do it with a straight face. Talk about liberal main stream media at its finest.

Scope it out 5K

I had a great time today running the Scope it Out 5K along Pennsylvania Ave in downtown Washington and set a personal best by just four seconds. I did not think the net time would adjust generously enough to give it to me but today was my lucky day. The weather was cloudy and misty and the sun did not come out until later. This was not the worst as the cooler weather was better for running. After the race we went to brunch at a new restaurant called Founding Farmers-a place owned by local farmers and all food is brought in from local farms. The breakfast was very good but none of us were thrilled with the service. It is near the George Washington campus so they hopefully will get their act together in time for all the parents coming during May's commencement.
